Forum: movie_of_the_week Subject: Regarding Cashel.

I've locked Cashel's ability to post for one month because he is contravening the Archive's terms of service:

http://www.archive.org/about/terms.php

..which include your agreement that you must abide by the rules:

'(g) not to harass, threaten, or otherwise annoy anyone'

I'm not sure that Cashel intentionally means to bait everyone, but his posts end up significantly reducing the quality, readability, and good-naturedness of the forum, and the constant arguments are driving a great deal of people away.

Hopefully this measure (which I really, really didn't want to have to take) will help stop all the constant arguments in the movies messageboards, since all of you are essentially good people, and the forums have been getting painful to read, of late.

Thanks again,
Simon.

Its a tough call. I agree that its hard to tell to what level the antagonism was intentional, but the lack of self moderation made things very difficult.

I hope Cashel will rejoin the Archive community. He has made valuable contributions to discussions and reviews. Even when I disagree with his perspective on a film I usually learn something by hearing his opinion.

I agree with akb. Cashel's contributions to the forum will be missed. I hope he returns next month.

Seriously, I had NOTHING against the guy, even though he quotes me as being malicious, I TRIED to understand his perspective on certain things, only to be hammered down again.

I somewhat feel guilty about this. I should have just ignored, but I was trying to debate some things he said, and it just weirdly escalated from there..

You cannot seriously discuss any topic someone who merely posts, and reposts, and then REPOSTS the same idea and changes the subject to his being attacked. It's like trying to discuss with Bill O'Reilly whether FOX "News" is fair and balanced. I am one of the few that posts here with his/her real name, and I try to be diplomatic, but if anyone posts merely to argue without being relavent to the content of the archive, as I believe jack/cashel did, then I believe that justifies action.

Thanks Simon. I too like Cashel's reviews - especially when he points out some of the more obscure actors in the Feature Films I've posted.

In general, I wish posts to these forums weren't so knee-jerk. These posts will be around for quite a while (this is an archive after all). Do you really want someone decades from now to see these petty arguments? I've looked at my own posts to Usenet that I did ten years ago (thanks to Google) and it wasn't pretty.

Okay, no more fuming from me. Thanks for all your support - keep the reviews coming.

There's discussing the movie, then there's discussing the discussion, then there's discussing the posts. In my opinion, discussing the posts is the least desirable outcome in the forum. I’m glad there’s been some proactive moderation here, and I hope the moderator will become more comfortable with the actions that must be taken for the good of the discussion.
